Twentieth-Century Wind Band Excerpts for Timpani: A Performance Guide
The University of Texas at Austin
With the evolution of the wind band has come an increase in the technical challenges placed on the performers and in the quantity of music written by prominent composers. Despite this, it is still orchestral excerpts that are exclusively studied and taught in preparation for auditions and performances. Wind band excerpts have not yet become a staple of individual practice or studio teaching even though this genre presents a variety of performance challenges. In particular, there exists a need for the compilation, analysis, and guidance of prominent and challenging timpani excerpts from the growing range of quality band repertoire. The purposes are: to isolate a collection of timpani excerpts from significant and frequently performed compositions of the wind band repertoire; to provide an analysis focusing on logistical and performance problems, preparation, and practical advice to aid in the successful performance of each excerpt; and to offer composers and conductors a useful resource that creates an awareness of the technical possibilities and demands placed on the timpanist.

An Unconventional Twentieth-Century Retrospective
The University of Texas at Austin
This unconventional retrospective concept delivers a wide variety of musical styles of the twentieth-century--one work from almost every decade. The pieces not originally composed for percussion have been included as a means to demonstrate the contributions by important composers of the century and to expose the listener to the versatility of percussion instruments.
